What to Include in a DIY Planner

If you decide to buy a planner, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of different styles and types available.

If you decide to make one, there are lots of popular ways of organizing it.

I’ve used a planner just about every year for the last 15-ish years. (I bought some of those and made some.) After using so many different types, these are the sections that I decided to include in my latest planner. I hope this article is helpful for you if you want to decide what to put in your planner.

Year at a glance

  • two facing pages that show small monthly calendar thumbnails for all 12 months

Inspiration board

  • a vision board — a page or two of pictures or words that you want to remember and focus on for the year

Missions

  • goals that might take all year or several months to finish

Every 3-6 months routine / Every year routine

  • a list or lists of tasks or chores that need to be completed four times or less every year

Monthly routine

  • a list of tasks or chores that need to be completed every month

Tasks for the month

  • a list of tasks or chores that need to be completed for each specific month; you’ll need 12 of these

Goals for the month

  • a list of the goals that you want to focus on for each specific month; you could choose one or two specific goals from your ‘Missions’ or ‘Inspiration board’ pages, for example; you’ll need 12 of these

Notes for the month

  • anything else that you need to write down; you’ll need 12 of these

Month at a glance

  • two facing pages that show the entire calendar for each month

Habits: each month

  • two facing pages with some sort of habit tracker chart or list for each month; you’ll need 12 of these

Weekly routine

  • a list of tasks or chores that need to be completed every week

Tasks for the week

  • a list of tasks or chores that need to be completed for each specific week; you could choose a few specific tasks from the ‘Tasks for the month’ page

Goals for the week

  • a list of the goals that you want to focus on for each specific week; you could choose one or two specific goals from your ‘Goals for the month’ page

Notes for the week

  • anything else that you need to write down

Week at a glance

  • one page, or two facing pages that show all seven days of the entire week

Daily routine

  • a list of tasks or chores that need to be completed every day

Each day

  • a page for each day; I include space for 3 very important tasks, 3 less (but still) important tasks, 5 quick tasks, appointments that are scheduled for specific times, a space to track things like how much water I drink, and a space for any other notes that I might need to write down

I hope this list helps you!

Stay amazing.

With love,

Latoinette
